Pitbull Puppy: Care, Training, and Diet

Pitbulls are a fighting dog breed whose genetic makeup is a cross between bulldog and terrier. Pitbull breeding was done in England, Scotland and Ireland in the nineteenth century. Pertaining to its aggressiveness towards humans, the pitbull has been a hot topic of controversy, but it was a mere myth.

Basically, this cross-breeding was done for hunting, especially to chase and catch semi-feral animals. Breeders have given the name, pitbull, to different breeds of dogs, including the bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier and Staffordshire bull terrier.

Because of their rare combination of power and agility, people adore this uncommon breed. They have also been used for security purposes. But this was not the purpose for creating this breed. To put it simply, the pitbull was raised and taught to be a fierce fighter, chaser and hunter.

Like other cross-breeds, pitbulls also need special training, care and food. This blog will discuss the keep and care of pitbulls, including food, training and other important concerns.

How To Take Care of a Pitbull

Keeping a pet is no big deal; the main concern is how to take care of your four-legged companion. Pitbulls are a special breed. Although they may be aggressive towards their owners, they are very sensitive and need great care. Here are some guidelines and instructions to keep your puppy healthy and happy.

Watch Interactions With Other Dogs

When your puppy is playing with other dogs, you should always keep an eye on them.

  • Take your dog home if you see them getting involved in a fight with other dogs.
  • When playing becomes fighting, a puppy may bite another or knock them to the ground. To avoid such a scenario, keep your dog isolated from other animals when required.
  • Keep at least six-foot leashes between your pitbull and other dogs. Alternately, have spray bottles and blow horns around to break up fights quickly.
  • You should reward your pitbull if they don’t fight with other puppies and they always obey you.

Carefully Introduce Your Pitbull to New Situations and People

While interacting with strangers or in new circumstances, your pitbull could experience anxiety or discomfort.

  • Before exposing it to more exciting events, ease in by starting with quiet, cozy surroundings.
  • Never put your dog in a situation where they appear to be uneasy.
  • Try introducing people to your pitbull at home if they seem anxious about meeting new people in public.
  • In some cases, you should introduce your pet to new experiences outside the house.
  • When your pitbull is around kids, always keep an eye on both the dog and kids.
  • Make sure the people you meet understand how to behave around your pitbull.
  • Avoid striking your pitbull puppy. Violence towards this breed simply fosters anger, anxiety and mistrust.

How To Train and Socialize Your Pitbull

The pitbull breed is known for its aggressive nature; however, one can handle this behavior with the proper training.

Basically, pitbulls are relatively easy to train. Moreover, they are a sociable breed that enjoy living with their owners. They are friendly with both adults and children. So, all they need is proper training and exercise.

Get Your Pitbull Proper Exercise

Exercise is crucial for your pitbull to stay healthy, burn excess energy and maintain its happiness and social engagement. Because a pitbull is a hunting and fighting dog, experienced trainers should look after them until they are fully trained and acclimated.

But when doing it on your own, follow these instructions:

  • If your pet has not reached three months of age, take them on walks that should not exceed 15 minutes.
  • When your pet is still young, you should take them for at least two daily walks.
  • Sometimes, your dog may want to move about freely. So, if possible, let them exercise in a large area.
  • Playing fetch is an effective way to spend time with your puppy and give them exercise at the same time.
  • Consult a trained specialist if you’re having problems training your pitbull.

Control Your Pitbull

Let your puppy know that they are under your command and control. For that, remember the following key points.

  • If your pitbull disobeys an order or activity, you should make them repeat the command or action. They will understand that they made a mistake and have to keep trying until they succeed.
  • When you are almost through with the instructions, let your dog relax.
  • Give your pitbull lots of opportunities to comply with your orders.
  • Teach your puppy to have full control of their paws, ears, tail and hands.

Proper Diet and Vaccination

Diet

In order to keep your pitbull healthy, it is crucial to provide them with a balanced diet.

  • Consult an expert for advice on feeding your pitbull.
  • Avoid commercial foods that contain grains and other low-quality components. Instead, opt for foods that list meat first .
  • Give your pitbull several regular meals throughout the day, instead of one big meal.
  • For information on how much food to feed your puppy each day, see the packaging or speak with your veterinarian.

Medical Care and Vaccinations

Besides enough exercise, training and diet, don’t forget that your pitbull needs proper medical care and vaccination.

  • Before you bring your puppy home, they should get an initial medical examination.
  • Consult your veterinarian about neutering or spaying your dog to avoid reproductive complications.
  • Groom your dog by giving them proper medication and regularly trimming their nails.
  • Ensure your pitbull gets the basic vaccinations, beginning at the age of eight weeks.

In the case of common complications such as minor injuries, if your vet is unavailable, you should immediately contact someone engaged in the profession, such as a veterinary nurse or a vet tech.

Choose Reliable Health Supplies for Your Puppy

Pitbulls are a special breed that need proper medication and health supplies. If you don’t take precautions when buying health products for your dog, it can lead to severe complications. So, make sure you purchase prescribed medications and recommended food for your pet from reliable sources.
